Trouble shooting barcodes

If the consignment sale uses a barcode, the barcode should look something like this on your tags.  (The tag layout itself may be different for your sale.)

Tag showing barcode correctly

If a series of numbers and letters appear like those in the oval on the tag to the right, it means that there is a problem with the barcode font.

If nothing appears in this location, you probably have not downloaded and imported the sale profile for this sale.

Possible Solutions

If you see a series of numbers and letters instead of a barcode, here are some things you can try.
A.  Did you actually install the font?  After downloading the font, it is necessary to install the font!  See the instructions for downloading and installing.  Did you restart your computer since installing the font?

B.  Test to see if the IDAutomationHC39M font appears as an option in other software such as Word or Notepad.  The illustration below is from Word.  Type a short phrase or some numbers.  Then select the phrase or numbers and change the font to IDAutomationHC39M.

If the barcode shows in Word or Notepad or other software but it only shows as a series of numbers (and not as a barcode) in TagIt or TagItLite, it will be necessary to try some other things.

C.  Try these suggestions from www.idautomation.com/kb/ttf-printing.html.   Some of these suggestions are listed below with links to additional help.  I would appreciate hearing what worked for you and what you tried that did not work.  Contact me at info@tagityourself.com.

1.

"Windows 95, 98, and ME can have problems with fonts when there are more than 700 or so fonts installed. No more then 500 fonts should be installed on these operating systems."  This also applies to XP and perhaps to Vista.
Need help on checking the number of fonts?
Would you like to use a font manager to uninstall fonts?
Several users have reported success with removing fonts!
2.  "If the font was installed by copying it to the Windows/Fonts folder, the font should then be “registered” as a font in the registry by opening the font in the Control Panel – Fonts. Also, confirm the font is an IDAutomation font.
     - Choose Start - Settings - Control Panel - Fonts.
     - Double click on the font and make sure it appears. A sample of the font should be visible with a copyright notice from IDAutomation.com, Inc. or BizFonts.com. If the sample and copyright notice is not there, remove the font and reinstall as...below. If the font is there, it will now be correctly registered and should work normally.
Need help on checking if barcode font is registered?

3.

"Sometimes the fonts have to be removed and re-installed before they will "register" and work correctly in Windows."  See above.
I have had a couple of reports that re-installing helped and other reports that it did not seem to make a difference.
I have had very few reports related to 4-7.

4.

"Make sure the printer installed is capable of printing graphics, as TrueType fonts usually will not work correctly without a default graphics printer."

5.

"To properly print the font on some printers, the PC may need to be setup to print TrueType fonts as graphics. To do this, click Start - Settings - Printers. Select the correct printer being used, choose Printer - Properties, and choose Options to make sure 'Print True Type as graphics' is selected; look in the Font or Graphics folders for these settings. The print mode may need to be changed to 'raster.' If these options are not present in the Printer-Properties, check a few of the other settings such as 'download True Type as bitmap soft fonts'.Sorry, I did not have examples of these options on printers available to me.

6.

"Try choosing a different "Print Processor". This option usually appears in the advanced section of the printer setup. Usually, good results can be obtained when selecting "WinPrint" as the print processor and "Raw" as the "Default Data Type". If this is a networked printer, make this change to the machine the printer is connected to.Need help on choosing a different "print processor"?

7.

"A poorly installed print driver, a bug in the print driver or a corrupt print driver can cause problems. Reinstall the print driver or obtain a new print driver from the printer vendor if it is available and do the following: Choose Start - Settings - Printers. Delete the printer. Restart the computer. Choose Start - Settings - Printers. Add the printer or follow instructions provided by the printer vendor. Restart the computer. Try printing again."

D.  Try printing to a pdf and see if the barcode fonts show.  If you do not have a pdf writer, a free program is available at CutePDF.  You can also experiment with different "printer" settings for the pdf writer.

E.  Alternatives.  If you are still unsuccessful, contact your sale owners to see if they will accept the tags without a bar code or are willing to have you export your items to them and return a PDF to you for printing.  See Export Inventory section.  You can also contact me at info@tagityourself.com

If you are having problems with barcodes, I would appreciate your help in learning if any of theseideas work for you.  You can download a worksheet that supplements the information above in Word or PDF format.  You can return your feedback to me at info@tagityourself.com or fill out and submit a response form.
